  7 December 2020

Dear Customers, Partners and Friends,

The longer the pandemic situation lasts, the clearer one thing becomes – the name we chose for our “Reloading Live” offerings is certainly a highly relevant one. Not least because our company is currently looking to reload itself with new contents and even to reinvent itself to a certain extent.

We would thus like to take this opportunity to share with you the findings we have acquired from the hybrid and virtual events that we have staged so far – showing you how these can be used to advantage for in-person meetings too. We also venture a look into the future of the trade fair business in an interview with both an organiser and an exhibitor.

One further aspect that has repeatedly been brought to mind more vividly in these times of working from home is the value of networking with our partners and customers. This is why one of the articles in this newsletter deals with the organisations that assist us here. And the feedback we have received from Ethiopian doctor Zuleka Ismail similarly provides an example of how we have all been able to work together to make a difference.

In this spirit, we would like to remind you that we are always there to support you with advice and assistance. No matter whether you are planning an event or would just like to discuss matters – we would be delighted to hear from you.

Kind regards,
Jonas Scharf, Managing Director Venues MCH Group

Hybrid and virtual events: a first-hand report.

Do hybrid and virtual event formats really constitute a genuine alternative to the standard event business? This is doubtless a question that many conference and trade fair organisers are currently asking themselves. We thus include a summary below of the most important findings from the pioneering events staged at Messe Basel.

A Christmas campaign with a major impact.

In 2019, a budding tropical doctor from Ethiopia attended a diploma course at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) in Basel. Her attendance was made possible by customers and partners of the Congress Center Basel (CCB) through the CCB’s Christmas campaign. Right on time for the festive season, Zuleka Ismail has now written to us to express her thanks once more and take a brief look back.

The trade fair, a marketing instrument with a future.

About 20 trade fairs are normally staged in Basel and Zurich each year. In these times of corona, however, the number is far lower. The measures being taken to stem the pandemic have made it more or less impossible to hold trade fairs. And the coming months are marked by uncertainty too. But how will this business develop over the long term? We asked two people in the know.

Membership of international congress and trade fair associations.

Numerous infrastructure providers operate globally, prompting them to engage in networking beyond national borders. The ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) is of major importance for the congress industry. The MCH Group is thus delighted that Jonas Scharf has been elected to its Board of Directors together with Angeline van den Broecke of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
