Feeding Hairs
"The hand-coloured work Feeding Hairs depicts the mouth implements of an African mosquito larva (Anopheles sp.) under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The motif was provided by Swiss TPH and the work created with support from the Pathology Department at Basel University Hospital and the School for Life Sciences at the FHNW. The part of the image that was selected focuses on the minute hairs that the mosquito larva uses to catch plankton. In the vastly magnified SEM image, these hairs resemble oversize spaghetti spoons. The motif is so strongly abstracted by virtue of the excerpt shown that even a researcher could not be expected to know precisely what it depicts. In 2014, the image was selected by Nature Publishing Group as the ‘Best Scientific Cover Image’; it treads a fine line between science and art. The original is in the imposing format of 80x135cm and has been produced in a limited edition of five." – Martin Oeggerli | www.micronaut.ch
